The main point to remember with drop shipping is that the “shipping” part is only a small fraction of the actual business. Just because you don’t have to carry, or ship the inventory, doesn’t mean you don’t need to know how to market; both offline and online. If you can’t sell water to a guy dying of thirst, then don’t bother getting into the business, since it is still a business which requires sales to function.

There are two important things though that you must understand if you want to be successful with dropshipping. You must find a good, reliable wholesale distributor dropshipper, and you must be willing to do the work required to build a successful business.
If you don’t know what dropshipping entails, it is when the manufacturer ships a product directly to a customer on your behalf. Therefore you don’t have to worry about inventory or shipping costs.
In order to choose a product that will be successful, do three things. Make sure the product is not already being sold all over the internet at prices you cannot compete with. Make sure the product targets a market niche and not something that caters to everyone; it is much easier to be successful this way. And ask yourself if the product is something you would buy.
Remember, most people who try to run a business online by using wholesale drop ship suppliers do not know how to market or promote products online. They will haphazardly throw up a website, maybe buy some Google AdWords and hope they get some traffic. They do not focus on building websites targeted to a niche. They don’t do any search engine optimization. They don’t try to capture their visitors email address and don’t stay in contact with their customers.
Selling wholesale drop shipped products on a website should not be your only means of revenue. Other venue like auction sites (eBay for instance), yard sales, other retailers, mail order, and flea markets can be used to make money. So, do not attempt to build a business using a wholesale drop ship supplier if you are not willing to truly be an entrepreneur. Using a dropshipper removes you from the order fulfillment process but it does not remove you from the rest of the business.
